By and large, by now our children had moved away from fiction as entertainment. They both loved biographies, especially of Christians.
The Henty series There are 100 of these. We learnt most of our history from them. I thought I wouldn't like them myself as too boyish, but I was wrong - I was gripped too. We read many aloud as a family as well as by themselves. Best bought from Robinson Curriculum if you are buying that curriculum as the books are formatted to print in booklet form, which you cannot do so easily from these other sites and even then waste a lot of paper.

Books by Ballantyne - There are many of these Black Ivory Fictious but true to fact story set in Africa at time of the slave trade. Not for the faint hearted. 12 + or by parental discretion. From a Christian view point.
This is a very old , rare book but it is wonderful. It is the history of English Protestantism for young readers. But don't be mistaken - it is not for young children, rather teens. Maybe younger children could cope with it in days gone by! We found our copy gathering dust on an elderly friends bookshelf on her departure. Keep your eyes open!
